One of its most direct ancestral lineages traces back to Mapouka — a traditional ceremonial dance originating from the Dabou region of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), practised by the Aizi, Alladian, and Avikam peoples of the south-eastern coast for centuries.Known as "la danse du fessier" — the dance of the behind — Mapouka was originally performed by women during rituals of fertility, celebration, and community. It was never just movement. It was an expression of feminine power, rooted in the earth and the body. That tradition travelled through the African diaspora, through the Caribbean, and evolved into the wining culture we carry today.When you move in this class, you are not just dancing. You are touching something ancient.WHAT MUSIC WILL WE BE MOVING TO?This workshop is a full musical journey through the Afro Caribbean soundscape from the pulse of West Africa to the islands and back. Expect to move to:Kompa — the smooth, sensual Haitian dance music born in the 1950s, designed to make your hips move before your mind catches up. Soca — the soul of calypso, born in Trinidad and Tobago, high-energy and built entirely for bodies in motion. Dancehall — Jamaica's bold, bass-driven rhythm that gave the world some of its most iconic wining moments. Afrobeats — the contemporary West African sound that has taken carnival floors and global stages by storm. Zouk — the slow, sensual groove from Guadeloupe and Martinique that strips movement back to pure hip connection.
